Barry Price specialises in Manton & Co Pistols, named after Joseph Manton. Joseph’s innovative inventions led to setting a trend for sporting guns, making them what they are today.
Joseph Manton was born in Grantham, Lincolnshire, in 1766 and in 1781, he began working under his brother, John Manton, a gunmaker of 6 Dover Street, London. Our stallholder, Barry Price, talks about why Manton & Co are so significant and in his words, he emphasises how they were “a premier guns smith, in the late 18th and early 19th century, as a founder. They opened in Calcutta, after there was some sort of bankruptcy where they originally sold.
“The guns were actually produced in England, and exported out there, and that pistol, (pictured above), was called a Heldar Pistol”.
